Higher Education

Two four-year colleges and a community college are located in Thurston County, each serving a distinct population. South Puget Sound Community College has more than 5,600 students each quarter and serves all adults, regardless of their previous education. Evergreen State College is a public, four-year liberal arts and sciences college serving a local, regional and national population. The current enrollment for Evergreen is more than 4000 full and part-time students. St. Martin’s University offers 22 undergraduate programs, six graduate programs and numerous pre-professional and certification programs. About 1600 students attend St. Martin’s main campus while more than 650 are enrolled at extension campuses nearby.

There are eight school districts providing primary and secondary education to most of Thurston County’s students. A full 75 percent of public school attendance is in three of the North County school districts: North Thurston serves 34 percent of the students; Olympia serves 24 percent; and Tumwater serves 17 percent of the County students.

There are 13 secondary schools, one institutional school (Maple Lane), and one vocational school (New Market Skills Center), are also located in the county. New Market School is recognized statewide as being “on the cutting edge” in technology, equipment and special programs.

Washington State Superintendent of Public Instruction provides information on Grades 4, 8 and 11 through the Washington State Assessment program, which is a five-year summary of achievement test trends in Washington School Districts. We also suggest that parents personally visit the individual schools and school districts in the area.

In addition to our excellent public schools, there is a wide variety of private and charter schools throughout the county.
